Introducing Geolocation Verification: Know Where Your Candidates Really Are

Today we're launching geolocation verification, a new feature that confirms candidates are interviewing from where they claim to be. This adds another layer of protection against proxy candidates and interview fraud.

The Problem We're Solving

Interview fraud has evolved beyond AI cheating tools. The threats now include proxy candidates (someone else taking the interview), foreign wage moles (cheap overseas labor posing as local hires), deepfake candidates, and organized fraud rings from North Korea and China trying to infiltrate companies and steal intellectual property.

These aren't hypotheticals. We've heard from customers who hired candidates claiming to be in San Francisco, only to discover weeks later the actual employee was working from a different country entirely. The person who interviewed wasn't the person who got hired. In some cases, the "employee" was funneling code and company data overseas.

Location verification is the first line of defense. If someone claims to be in Austin but is actually connecting from Pyongyang, you want to know that before the interview even starts.

How Geolocation Verification Works

When a candidate joins an InterviewGuard-protected interview, we verify their location using multiple signals. This isn't just IP geolocation, which can be spoofed with VPNs. We use a combination of system-level data points to determine where someone actually is.

We detect if the connection is being routed through a VPN, proxy, Tor, or a data center IP, and we provide the detected location. You can compare this against what the candidate claimed in their application. If something looks off, you can ask them to disconnect from the VPN or proxy during the interview, and we'll pick up their actual location automatically.

What You'll See

Your interview report now includes a location verification section showing:

  • The detected city and country
  • Whether it matches the candidate's stated location
  • VPN or proxy detection flags
  • Confidence level of the location determination

Privacy Note

We detect city-level location, not precise addresses. Candidates are informed that location verification is part of the interview process. We don't store exact coordinates or share location data with third parties.

Already Available

Geolocation verification is now live for all InterviewGuard customers at no additional cost. It's enabled by default for new interviews. Check your next interview report to see it in action.
